Installing the SHOUTcast Server on Windows 95, 98, NT

Installing SHOUTcast Server on Windows 9x/NT is actually quite an easy task, you just have to be familiar with ZIP compression a bit to get around. ZIP is a compression type that allows mulitple files to be compacted into one file. Once you download the one file, you would use a ZIP decompression utility to extract the files and place them into a folder for use in the future. We recommend that you use Winzip. It is the most popular ZIP decompressor on the Internet and extremely easy to use.

Once you get to the download page of SHOUTcast.com, you would have to save the ZIP file to your hard drive. To do this, right click on the link for the SHOUTcast Win32 Server. In the right click menu, select "Save Target As..." in Internet Explorer, or "Save Link As..." in Netscape Navigator. The menus should look like the following:



Once you click on the appropriate menu selection in your respective browser, it will display a dialog box similar to this:



We recommend you save the file on your Windows Desktop with it's original file name so that it may be easier to find. Once the download is completed, assuming you have Winzip or another ZIP decompressor installed, you should open the ZIP file by double clicking on the file icon that is created on your desktop. A window that should pop-up that looks like the following:



You must now extract the file. Simply click on the "Extract" button located in the toolbar at the top of the main Winzip window. A new window will open prompting you to select a destination to extract the files to.



You can place the files in any folder, they are not destination dependent, however, we recommend you place them in "C:\Program Files\Winamp\SHOUTcast\" so that they are easier to find. Once you have a found a location you are satisfied with, press the "Extract" button on the upper right hand part of the window.

To complete the installation, you should create a shortcut to the file somewhere more accessible. Open the folder you extracted the files to, right click on the "SC_Serv.exe" and choose the "Create Shortcut" option from the menu. Please refer to the image below:



Now, just move the shortcut to your desired location, and that's it! To start the SHOUTcast Server, simply double click on the shortcut.
